What Are the Different Kinds of Aussiedoodle Colors?

One of the unique characteristics of the Aussiedoodle is the variety of colors they come in. Rather than the typical solid colors found in most breeds, Aussiedoodles come in several color combinations and patterns. Due to the fluffy teddy bear’s cuteness and fun-loving personality, selecting this breed is probably the easiest. On the other hand, when selecting a specific color of this breed. The task of selecting a specific pup may become more difficult. The dam, or mother, can be any of the various color patterns and combos Australian Shepherds come in. Aussiedoodles are more known for combining colors or patterns than solid, standard colors. The color choices and combos that Aussidoodles are referred to can be overwhelming.  Therefore, understanding certain terms used to identify color combos can help to picture what a specific type of Aussiedoodle appearance will be. There are endless terms for Aussiedoodle colors, so we’ll stick to the most referred to terms used when asking the question; What color do Aussiedoodles come in?

Aussiedoodles can take after the color patterns of the Australian Shepherd or the Poodle or can be a mix of the two breeds’ colors. White, black, red, brown, cream and apricot Poodles are the most popular colors of studs used for breeding.

Tuxedo Aussiedoodle

Probably the most dapper of all the Aussiedoodle appearances and one of the more popular looks. The classic-looking Tuxedo Aussiedoodle will be majorly solid in color, such as black, red, or chocolate, with patches of white specifically on the neck, chest, and feet.

Merle Aussiedoodle

Red and Blue Merle Aussiedoodles have a gene that will dilute the solid base color of their fur. The dilution of a black dog can appear as gray/blue. The gene can affect all the solid coat colors or areas of the coat. Red Merle Aussiedoodles have a brown base coat with a merle gene creating a speckled look of browns or tans. White markings can also be found in random spots of the merles. Because no two Merles will look alike, the unique blue or red Merle Aussiedoodles are a highly sought-after color. An Aussiedoodle can be a solid merle, a tricolor merle, a parti, merle, phantom merle. And the list goes on.

Tri-Color Aussiedoodle

Tri-color Aussiedoodles are a combo of three colors such as black, red, or brown, white, and tan or copper, resembling the Australian Shephard’s typical look. Their characteristic feature is a white blaze between their eyes, on their chest, and on the paws or feet or up their legs. This feature with only two coat colors is called a Bi-Color Aussiedoodle.

Phantom Aussiedoodle

Phantoms typically have one dominant color, such as a black or brown coat with random, generous amounts of tan highlights on their paws, legs, chest, neck, above their eyes, or muzzle. They can also have areas of white as well. The phantom is a rare color choice.

Parti Aussiedoodle

The term Parti means partially or particularly colored. Imagine starting with a white canvas and adding splashes of various shades of browns, blacks, or reds. Splashes of colors can also be merle or, as we referred to them earlier, diluted colors of the above shades. Patri Aussiedoodles will have at least 50% white coats with a secondary color. Partis’ can look like a Tuxedo Aussiedoodle, which is a variation of the Parti, but generally hold more white color than a tuxedo. Parti markings can be random, not specifically on the neck, chest, and feet, as in the Tuxedo Aussiedoodle. 

Abstract Aussiedoodle

Abstract Aussiedoodles are also a variation of the Parti but on the flip side. Rather than at least 50% white coats with secondary color markings. Abstracts will have at least 50% color coats, such as black, brown, or red, with random white markings. 

Solid Color Aussiedoodle

Most solid-looking Aussiedoodles’ will still hold more than one color. A dark-colored poodle bred with a dark-colored shepherd will result in a mostly dark-colored Aussiedoodle. However, they still will have small markings of a secondary color. Most breeders prefer to combine different colors of parents as the unique appearance of the patterns is more sought after than a solid-colored Aussiedoodle.

Although the appearances of Aussiedoodles’ are so varied and unique to each owner, one thing is common across the board; the potential to fade or change color. Poodles hold the right to ownership for this characteristic due to a gene they carry and pass on. Although not subjective to all Aussiedoodles and less likely in adults, fading or changing of color is common in their first year of life. 

On the one hand, Aussiedoodles are guaranteed to be adorable, fun, friendly, loving, and affectionate. This we know. But on the other hand, the multitude of patterns and color combinations having the potential to change appearances can make this breed a one-of-a-kind, surprise, mystery pup!
